RASPBERRIES.
GOOD SUPPORT NEEDED,
Those who intend planting raspberries should lose no time now in getting them in, while tlio soil still retains, some warmth. The ground should be bastardtrenched and manured, preferably a few weeks in advance. The raspberry makes a number of fibrous roots near the surface, so it should be planted sliallowly. Work the soil well in among the roots, and tread it gently but firmly. It is advisable also to give a thought to the manner in which the canes ar« to be trained. They are sometimes bundled up to a post and tied together, but this is not a method to be recommended. _If they are to be planted in chimps, drive in a couple of stout stakes, and at the top fasten a hoop, about 18in in

diameter. Then four or five canes can be tied at equal distances round the hoop and all will receive their share of light and air. Perhaps the best method, when space allows of it, is to train the canes to wires strained between strong posts. The posts should be about six feet long to allow about, 18in being driven into the ground. At 2ft from the surface secure the first wire, and the second or f;op one Ift or 2ft above that. The canes should be planted a foot apart. As the canes, are likely to be swayed by the winds, thereby delaying root formation, they may be shortened a little, but do not ciit them right back at this time. About August they must be cut down to within Gin or 9in of the ground, and then strong canes will be produced which will fruit'well the following year.
