SWEEPING VICTORY.
Coalition in South African Election. TIELMAN ROOS DEFEATED. (Received 10.30 a.m.) CAPETOWN, May 18. The general election in South' Africa resulted in an overwhelming; victory for the Nationalist-South African party coalition. The state of the parties at live o'clock to-night was: — Coalitionists H<> Koosites Labour ~ Independents 5 Mr. P. 0. Grobler, Minister of Lands, defected Mr. Tielman Koos bv 544 votes, while his son, Jan (Irobler, defeated a Koosite in a neighbouring constituency by over 1000.
Mr. Gerry Bouwer, a well-known racing motorist, one of tlie Roos party, was returned for Boksburg. Colonel Creswell, formerly Minister of Labour and Defence, retained his seat, winning Belville in a hot three-coi nered contest. Mr. Madeley retained Benoni. Mr. Mac Arthur captured Umbilo for Labour. Greyville returned Mr. Darbyshire, the first home ruler.
