CYCLING.

AUCKLAND AMATEURS. FIXTURES. Sunday, May 28.—Club run to Heicnsville, 0.30 a.m. Saturday, June 3.—10 Miles Open Handicap Centre Kace. Under conditions that were not exactly perfect the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club staged a 20^-mile race at\ Te Atatu. The members seem determined to maintain the average of 16 riders per race, for that number again faced the starter, Mr. E. King, last week. The race itself was full of interest notwithstanding an unusually large crop of mishaps. W. Barry had the misfortune to puncture when in a handy position. Some of the other unlucky ones were: R. Rollinson, who lost a pedal; C. Melville, with cramp; A. Birchall, whoso knee gave out on him; while Speight, riding for the first time, found the going a little bit tough. The pace was clapped on right from the start, and the members passed the 11-mile mark in the following order; Phillips, 35.15; Perks, 35.46; Crocker, Rollinson, 30.35; Morrison, 36.36; Moshiem, 37.51; Webster, Porter, Thackwell, Barry, 38.16; Arvidson, 38.30; Patrick, 40.20. The second lap, which was even faster than the .first, saw Crocker move to second place, and R. Arvidson jump from first to last to third place, and that order was carried on until the finish, which saw the result with riding times of the various members: L. Phillips (1), 63.32; W. Crocker (2), 61.59; R. Arvidson (3), 59.1: Webster (4), 61.16; Moshiem (5), 63.47; Thackwell (6), (54.14; Perks (7), 68.59; Patrick (8), 02.5; Porter (9), 65.28; Morrison (10), 72.8. L. Phillips (7.0) riding in his first club road race, proved that, although not possessing any great speed or dash, he has the stamina to maintain a steady pace for a long distance, which should prove very useful in the longer races. Although he returned fifth fastest time, he seemed to b( (is fresh at the finish as when he sta-. ted. W. Crocker (4.30) seems to have struck form early this season, for in the last two races he has been well up at the finish, and has also made good time. Bill should be in his element later on when the longer races appear, for he has shown a marked preference for those races. R. Arvidson (1.15), riding like a j veteran, again secured fastest time. He'

is an honest rider, who will always take his share of the work, and for a first season rider his performance ranks as one of the best. He has set an example to some of the older riders, who are inclined to loaf hoping for a better handicap, and in doing so make the work of the liandicapper even harder still. Second fastest time was secured by H. Webster. This rider, with others like G. Patrick, R. Arvidson and It. Taylor, should prove to be this club's hope in future open races. Some fast work on the rollers would improve this rider out of sight. A combined run over the new Centre course is expected to take place on May 21. V

The Auckland Amateur Cycle Club will hold a 23 miles invitation race at Te Atatu on Saturday, commencing at 2.30 o'clock. Handicaps G. Patrick, It. Arvidson, scr ; H. Taylor, C. Ilognn, 11. TAKAPUNA-LYNNDALE EVENTS. At Takapuna last Saturday Lvnndale members were the guests of the local club in invitation races held over the lake circuit. Although the Lynndale riders filled most of the placings, the Takapuna riders were not disgraced. The junior race was held over three laps of the circuit (11V* miles) and the isenior race was five laps (18% miles). In the junior race the scratch riders soon picked up the front markers, and the field of seven riders entered the straight together. In a great finish F. Johnson (Lynndale) just managed to get first place from Ross-Jones (Takapuna). Inches only separated this pair. Then followed A. Chaplin (Takapuna), with O. McKee (Takapuna), A. Davies (Lynndale), M. Hathaway (Takapuna), P. Bowden (Takapuna) finishing in that order. The difference in time between the first and last rider was only 4 seconds. F. Johnson (Lynndale) also secured time honours—32.3o 4-5. Ross-Jones (Takapuna) second fastest time (32.40), has the makings of a good rider. This race was only his third or fourth race, and when he has had more experience he should prove himself a good rider in open company. 1 Twenty-three riders faced the starter in the senior 18%-mile race. T. Moloney was the limit man, and G. Gooder (Lynndale), C. Johnson (Lynndale), and B. Sharp (Takapuna) were the scratch ni§n. Moloney led the field at the commencement of the last lap by a minute. He was followed next by A. Smith (Lynndale), K. Hanken (Lynndale) and A. Grant (Takapuna) in that order. The rest of the field was strung out. These three riders quickly overhauled and dropped Moloney to enter the straight for the la6t time, where Smith (Lynndale) sprinted hard to get first place (52.17) from K. Hanken (Lynndale), second • (52.46 3-5), with A. Grant (Takapuna) close up third (52.18). G. Gooder (Lynndale), scratch, 50.46, made fastest time. B. Sharp (Takapuna), scratch, 50.47. and O. Johnson (Lynndale), scratch, 50.47 1-5, were close alongside. Smith and Hanken (Lynndale) rode a great race, while A. Smith and A. Grant were responsible for the fastest lap of the day, being clocked in 9.55. Grant (Takapuna) is a great toiler, and has finished second and third in the placing on several occasions, and with more experience will be one of the hardest riders in the club to beat. T. Moloney showed promise, and in finishing fourth did very well, but found the last lap very hard. The Takapuna Club is holding an open meeting next Saturday, when senior riders from all clubs will compete ov«r a six-lap race of . the lake circuit (22% miles).

An open race over 22J miles will be held by the Takapuna Amateur Club on Saturday. Handicaps:—L. Dwigbt. H. O. Browne, scr; C. Gooder, P. Markham, 1.0; B. Sharp, V. Blomfield, C. Johnson, J. It Hall.
