Forthcoming Fleet Activities In Pacific. RETENTION OF ISLANDS. LONDON, May 16. The "Daily Telegraph" naval correspondent, Mr. Hector C. Bywater, draws attention to the Japanese naval manoeuvres to be held in August. He says they are to be on an unprecedented scale and 200 vessels will be engaged.
The venue is significant. It is in the neighbourhood of the ex-German islands in the Western Pacific, comprising the Mariana, Caroline, Pelew and Marshall groups. These are openly described as Japan's foremost rampart against aggression.
It has been made clear, says the writer, that Japan intends to hold these islands, and the manoeuvres are designed to test their value as bases for ° the Japanese battle fleet and auxiliary forces. -
