PRAISE FOR PRESS.

CHILD WRITING ENCOURAGED. Complimentary reference to the efforts made by the Press in Auckland to encourage writing by school children was made at this "morning's meeting of the Auckland Education Board. It was decided that letters of appreciation should be sent to the newspapers. "Here is no doubt that the newspapers are encouraging a number of children to write/' said Mr. C. , It. Munro. "They are doing a great work for children, especially those in backblock districts. The children's pages are undoubtedly of considerable value." Mr. R. Hoe said that some of the provincial newspapers were also doing their share in the same way. The chairman, Mr. T. U. Welle, said that a 14-year-old • crippled girl in Auckland had recently written a book. It was a remarkable effort. The opinion that the Auckland newspapers were providing a wonderful service in stimulating an interest in literature was expressed by the senior inspector, Dr. T. W. Mcllraith.
