MOTOR CYCLE NOTES.

ATTACK ON RECORD. C. GOODWIN UNLUCKY. FAST SOUTHERN RIDERS. Owing to the poor visibility, the Auckland Motor Cycle Club's timekeepers were unable to clock Cass Goodwin when he flashed past them at over 100 m.p.h. in hie attempt on the New Zealand beach record at Muriwai on May 7. On his first run along the beach, Goodwin did 105.0 m.p.h., easily beating the record now held by W. Kilmister, but on the second run, only one of the three timekeepers was able to check his speed. Having proved, however, that his mount is capable of the required speed, Goodwin intends to make a third attempt on the record next Sunday, when some of the local motor car drivers will also be trying out their best speeds. Since W. Kilmister put up a new Dominion record of 104.048 m.p.h. at Waikanae Beach early in the year, Goodwin has made two attempts to beat him, riding on both occasions M. Robinson's machine, which has, like Kilmister's, a J.A.P. engine. On this machine, with a side car attached, M. Robinson set up a new Dominion side car record of 80.3 m.p.h. at Muriwai last Eaeter. The same day, Goodwin rode it in an attack on the Dominion, solo record, and although the beach was very wet and soft, he averaged in two runs 94 m.p.h., a record for Muriwai, but 10 m.p.h. slower than th«\ Dominion record.

Reliability Trial. A one-day reliability trial is to be held by the Auckland Motor Cycle Club on June 3, riders leaving from the railway station at 0.30 a.m. The course will be approximately 100 miles, leading through Waitakaruru and back to Auckland via Miranda and New Brighton. The Pascoe Cup trial is to be held in August, but the date has not yet been fixed.

Southern Records. Some of the Southern ridere have been putting up extremely fast speeds at club meetings. In a series of half-mile sprints at the Txion Motor Cycle Club's meeting at Waikanae Beach, three riders did over 90 m.p.h. on 500 c.c. machines. The best was W; Kilmister, 104.651 on a Norton J.A.P., Hewer on a Rudge did 94.736 m.p.h., and Colcman on an Enfield did 93.75. . After the Pioneer Sports Club's meeting at North Beach last month, the names of L. Harrington, L. Homer and R. G. Ranby were forwarded to the N.Z.A.C.U. as claimants for New Zealand records for the flying mile in the various classes. Times for the flying mile were:— 250 CO. Class. —L. Harrington (O.K. Supreme), 53 1-lOa, 67.8 m.p.h.

Riding a 4.98 A.J.S., Don Bain, of New South Wales, covered the 575 miles from Melbourne to Sydney in 11 Lours 27 minutes, cutting 1 hour 9 minutes off the record, which stood to the credit of Alex. Finlay. Finlay, however, rode a B.S.A. with a side car, so that record still stands.
