STRIKING PATEA MEMORIAL THE AOTEAROA MIGRATION. (By-Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) ":'.. HAWEKA, thifl day. Possessing unique character! itics in design, which are both beautiful and striking, the memorial at Patea in front of the municipal buildings to the famous Polynesian navigator Turi will shortly be an accomplished fact. Turi settled at Patea after the 1300mile voyage, in the war 'canoe Aotearoa and fortified the headland to the south of the Patea River. Descendants of the Aotearoa migration still reside in the district. Six ornamental pillars of concrete and faced with boulders, supporting a canoe 55ft long and sft wide, will comprise the memorial to the navigator and days that are gone. The details of the canoe's construction and decoration and symbols will be historically correct. It is fitting that shingle should come from Patea Peach and that karaka trees should be chosen to provide softening background.
