CLERK HONOURED.
LONG BOROUGH SERVICE. PRESENTATION AT THAMES. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. Members of the various borough committees and ex-councillors assembled last evening in the Borough Chambers in honour of the retiring town clerk, Mr. A. Chapman, who retired last month after 24 years of service. Eulogistic reference was made by tho Mayor, Mr. Ensor, and others to tho work of Mr. Chapman, and the capable and conscientious manner in which he carried out his duties. Mr. F. H. daxton, who was Mayor when Mr. Chapman was appointed town clerk in 1909, presented him with an easy, chair and a smoker's companion as a token of good wishes. Mr. Chapman thanked the donors and paid a high tribute to the work of past Mayors and councillors. In proposing the toast of kindred local bodies, Mr. C. J. Garland referred' to the question of overlapping, and mentioned that the Thames Borough, the Thames County and the Hauraki Plains all had metal quarries on which much money had been expended. One could supply all the metal required. He contended that there was need of co-ordinating the work of the Borough Council and the Harbour Board, which. had now the opportunity of working together.
Mr. C. S. Donovan, on behalf of the Thames School of Mines and the Chamber of Commerce, said it was pleasing to note the local bodies were always desirous of assisting any movement for the good «f ttte distrfct."
