ETHICS OF ART UNIONS.

The refusal of some Church leaders to accept money proceeds from art unions to alleviate distress seems to be illogical and un-Christian. Monev is a medium of exchange between goods which are produced by Nature with the assistance of human labour: "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof." "Gold and silver are mine and the cattle upon a thousand hills." "There is nothing common or unclean." If money, or the pur-chasing power of goods, passes through the hands of the gambler, does that alter the intention of its creation? Will the goods purchased therewith contaminate the recipient? Must a child remain in want because of extreme scruples? When Christ broke bread and gave to feed the multitude, did He first ask if the bakers' hands were clean? The advice to the rich man, "Go and sell all thou hast and give to the poor" made no provision for the sterilisation of that wealth before distribution, because it rightly belonged to the poor, who through inadequate distribution had arrived at that state. A little more charity "which endureth all things, suffereth all things," would be more Jielpful in the present evil times. BLOCKHOUSE BAY.
