INTOXICATED IN CAR.
MAN REALISED DANGER.
STOPPED AND GOT OUT.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this day. "If every driver who has been charged with intoxication did as my client, and when he felt that he was becoming too intoxicated to continue driving his car stopped the vehicle arid got out, there would not be so many of these distressing accidents we hear about to-day," said Mr. L. A. Johnson, in the Police Court this morning, defending John Peter McLennan, who was charged with being intoxicated in charge of his car in Maunu' Road last night. McLennan pleaded not guilty. Evidence was given by Thomas William Cameron, of Maunu Road, that about 4 o'clock yesterday he saw a stationary car on the Maunu Road. He saw a man getting from it. The man stumbled and fell, and witness thought ho was under the influence of liquor. Witness went away for some time, and then went to look for accused. He found him in a paddock, and thought he might have wanted assistance. Later still he saw accused lying on the wet ground, and, for his own good sent for. the police. Constable Harrington said he and Constable Brown went to Maunu Road, and were shown where accused was by Cameron. Accused was under the influence of liquor. Witness asked him what he was doing, and accused replied that he was minding his own business. He said the car was his and admitted he drove it to where it was standing. In fining accused £5 and costs 10/, the magistrate, Mr. G. N. Morris, said that in sucli a case as this one' he was prepared not to touch accused's license. There was, however, the other side of the question, and that, was that people had to realise that a man must not drive and drink at the same time.
