NEW SUPPLY NEEDED.

NORTH SHORE WATER.

DEVONPORT MAYOR'S VIEW.

The belief that the North Shore would have to seek an entirely new source of water supply in place of that now provided by Lake Pupuke, was expressed by Mr. H. F. W. Meikle, Mayor of Devonport, when reviewing the question at last night's meeting of the borough council. Mr. Meikle said that as a result of the expedients employed by the Devonport council since the development of the trouble, there had been an improvement in the quality of the water drawn from the lake. An engineer from the Public Works Department, who had inspected the temporary works a few days ago, had commented most favourably on the measures adopted and on the results achieved in the removal of the offensive odour from the water. Tie engineer had also expressed the view that'the lake could be treated, and that it was the finest fresh water reservoir in the world, and should not be abandoned. He had suggested that treatment by blueetone could be carried out effectively. Specifications for the treatment works for the water drawn from the lalje were now being completed. By the end of the week general use would be made of the special screens, which enabled 99 per cent of the protozoa to be removed before the water entered the mains. With the utilisation of the screens until permanent works were established, a good deal of the trouble would disappear.

Mr. Meikle gave it as his opinion that a water supply in addition to that from Lake Pupuke would be required, and something would have to be done in the near future. A small additional scheme, such as the Lignite Stream proposal, would only add to the capital charges of a bigger scheme, and that would mean an increased cost for water. He favoured looking elsewhere. The Mayor and Mr. E. H. Little were appointed the council's representatives on the North Shore Boroughs' Water Board. ' L
