SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
A meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in the Methodist schoolroom, Northcote, on May 0, when Mrs. Hulbei't was in the chair. Mrs. Neal, of the medical branch, gave an address. * * » » At the Women's Progressive Club, Y.W.C.A., Mrs. Robson presided, when Mrs. Dreaver spoke on "Chairmanship." The Mothers' Club members were welcomed. Supper was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Bragg, Horsfield and Miss Horsfield. * * • • There was a good attendance of members at tho Otahuhu branch of the Mothers' Union meeting held last Thursday, service in the Holy Trinity Church being conducted by the Rev. R. J. Stanton, members afterwards adjourning to tho Parish Hall to hear Mrs. Maguire whose address was greatly enjoyed by all. Afternoon tea hostesses were Mesdames R. B. Todd, Fen ton, Flood, Boniface, Martin, Smith, Morrin, Downey and Miss Carson.
Instead of the usual monthly meeting on Saturday evening th© Ponsonby branch held the yearly "Fathers' Night." Mrs. F. W. Whyte gave an address on "Running tho home on a co-operative basis." During the evening vocal, musical and elocutionary items were rendered by Mrs. De Berg, Misses F. Cooke, J. Clarkson, L. Donovan, R. Brown, J. Miller, G. Weir, Zimmer and Gadsby. Mrs. English gave the thought for the month. Mr. R. H. Horsley, on behalf of the fathers present, thanked the president and members for a very enjoyable meeting, and wished the branch every success in its work. * * « * The Garrick Dramatic Socicty gave a rendering of Sir J. M. Barrie's "Dear Brutus" last Monday evening at their club rooms, Colwill Chambers, Swan soil Street. The various roles were taken by Kathleen Barton, Nancy Warren, Iwa Pearson, Sylvia Jones, Frances Shearer and Temple Dewdney, Irwin Crookes, Rex Sayers, Allan Warren, Charles, Crookes and Angus McDonald. Miss Joan Airey contributed a pianoforte solo, and a pleasant evening was spent. Among those present were: Mesdames R. C. Airey, Wilson, F. Warren, Pearson, Blackie, Stevenson, Misses Stubbs7 Grant, Ryan, Jones, Welters and Oram. « * » * Mrs. A. Donovan presided at the annual meeting of members of the Te Aroha branch of the Women's Division. The resignation of Mrs. Donovan as president was received with regret, and she was tendered a hearty vote of thanks for her leadership in the past, and presented with a handsome bouquet in autumn tints. The annual report stated there were 24 financial members,' that all meetings had been well attended, and that satisfactory work had been done during the term. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs. Hair; vice-president, Mrs. Waugh and Mrs. Stewart; secretary, Mrs. Young; treasurer, Mrs. Foster; social hostess, Mrs. J. Strange; committee, Mesdames Milne, Eastwood, Gillan and Wild.
An enjoyable programme wa.s submitted at the gathering of the Birkenhead Women's Association yesterday afternoon, in the Parish Hall. Songs were givci) by Mesdames D. MaeDonald, T. McKniglit. T. Atkins, Miss L. Court, as. well as a talk on Arab women by Mrs. C. G. Aslidowne. and recitations by Miss N. Wright. The accompaniments were played by Misses P. George and M. Hewson. With a view to raising funds for the association's relief fund, a "Bring-and-buy" stall, in charge of Mrs. E. B. Gilfillan, was started, and will be continued throughout the session at all afternoon meetings. The innovation was very successful. The president, Mrs. A. E. Wood, stated that over £27 had been collected at Birkenhead for the Poppy Day fund, which included £4 3/ from Birkdale,- and she thanked the various ladies who had assisted. The president congratulated Mesdames J. Prickett and R. R. Havman on their re-election as members of the Birkenhead school committee, and commended the loyal support of „ the, members, who, she was gratified to say, had attended the householders' meeting in response to the appeal she had made at the last meeting. Mrs. Wood also explained the position in respect to the proposal to limit sei-ie fishing, stating that further information was being obtained by the National Council of Women.
The May At Home of the Catholic Women's League took place oil Monday evening at the league rooms. The president, Mrs. Billing, was assisted in receiving the guests by Mrs. Cruickshank, vice-president. A musical programme was contributed by Mrs. De Berg and Miss Browne, and a clever sketch, "The Crystal Gazer," was presented by Miss Mary Wathew and Mrs. Poole. The rooms were decorated in shades of gold and brown, masses of chrysanthemums being used, also large stands of blue hydrangeas added to the general effect. The speaker for the evening was Miss Elsie Morton, who gave a "travel talk." A collection of photographs of tho parts described were inspected by the members. Among the guests were Miss Q. Sheppard, and Mrs. Campbell, the secretary of the Tauranga branch of tho league.
On Tuesday evening the drama section of the Penwomen's Club, under Miss E. Craig, presented two one-act plays. "Legend," a story dealing with people whose lives are bound up with the sea, was produced by Miss Kathleen Teape, those members taking part being Mrs. J. Howie, Misses Kathleen Teape and Gwvnnc Peacock. The secon<j|play, dealing with the French revolution, was produced by Mrs. Schmitt, and the parts were enacted by Mrs. Booth, Mrs. Spinley and Miss Edna Craig. Those present were: The convener, Mesdames Bennett, Innes, Roose, Craig, Spinley, Booth, Downie, Quinn, Brummel, Heine, H. 11. Davy, Carte Lloyd, ,J. Howie, Misses, Quinn, Quill, Spurling, Jean Hill, Ilughes, Bayly, Cock. Manning, F. Skeates, R. Cleave, Goulding, KingMason, M. Innes, R. Todd, W. Todd, Teape, Haresnape, Baxter, D. Leslie, M. Bryan, Gwynne Peacock.
The opening of the Gas Company's Employees' Social Club was held recently at the Pitt Street Social Hall. Winter flowers and foliage were used for decorative purposes, and excellent dance airs were supplied by an orchestra. Mrs. J. J. Rogers acted as hostess, and wore a black eillc lace frock. Among those present were:—Mrs. A. Gow, in ivory silk floral ninon and coatee; Mrs. G. Kenny, beige georgette; Mrs. G. \V. Taylor, fawn satin; Mrs. H. Levick, golden brown georgette; Mrs. C. Mills, black georgette; Mrs. McKay, black silk; Mrs. Broadribb, ciel blue silk; Airs. Leatherbarrow, brown embossed georgette; Miss Paton (Christchurch), black georgette; Miss Sisgwortli,- black ring velvet; Miss Bond, apricot lace; Miss Brown, Nile blue silk; Miss Doris Rogers, apricot satin; Miss Dixon, cherry silk, with velvet cape; Miss A. Forrester, silver lame and red velvet; Miss Levick, Nile green satin.
Mrs. W. P. Vicary, wire of Sur-1 geon-Connnander Vicary, of Dilworth Avenue, Remuera, was hostess at a large tea held in the reception hall of Milne and Clioyce yesterday nfternoon. The function was to bid farewell to the many friends made during her sojourn in Auckland. Mrs. Vicary leaves by special train this afternoon for Wellington en route to London. The tables were artistically arranged in gold and primrose flowers, and the hostess received the guests in a dove grey tweed ensemble and a black hat.
