FEELING TRIBUTE.
SIR ALEXANDER GRAY. SUPREME COURT REFERENCES. With bowed heads, members of the Auckland Law Society paid a tribute in the Supreme Court this morning to. the memory of the late Sir Alexander Gray, K.C., late president of the New Zealand Law Society, who died in Wellington last week. Mr. Justice Herdman and Mr. Justice Smith were associated on the Bench. "At the age of 73, after more than 50 years at the bar, a man of exceptional personal charm, and one of New Zealand's foremost counsel, a very upright and noble gentleman, Sir Alexander Gray, lias passed away," said Mr. A. M. Goulding, president of the Auckland Law Society. "Not only the profession, but also the public of New Zealand is the poorer. He was one of a coterie of most brilliant lawyers and judges. His monument surviveth. Scattered through the law reports of New Zealand over the years are monuments to his devoted work." A splendid tribute from Sir Alexander Herdman, who had been, associated with Sir Alexander Gray over many years, followed. "My brother Smith "and I desire _ to associate ourselves with you in expressing our regret at the public loss that has been suffered as a result of the Uleatli of Sir Alexander Gray," said his Honor. _ "I am in a position to speak of him as a lawyer and as a man. In his time he was unquestionably a sound and able member of the legal profession, but the characteristic which' he possessed which appealed most strongly to those who were privileged to know him was his sterling worth, his fine character. Our regrets' mingle with a feeling of deep compassion for a widow and family who have been left to lament- his loss."
