FUN OF CORRESPONDENCE.

AN INTERESTING LETTER.

Hikimutu, R.R.2., Taumarunui. Dear Peter Pan, — The following is an extract from a letter I received from my overseas penfriend, who lives in Johannesburg, South Africa. I thought it rather interesting. "What are the Maori people like in New Zealand? In South Africa we have natives of different races, like Bantu and Xosa, etc. Some of the folks axe awfully weird. We only came to Johannesburg about two years ago, and before we always lived in the country, where the natives were more natural. Their concerts are the weirdest affaire. They gave one for my dad when we left and we all went. It was supposed to start at 7.30, but we went fit 8 o'clqck and they hadn't begun because the chairman had lost the only programme. When we were quite far through the concert it was begun again on account of latecomers. You are not supposed to encore them, but you must pay for so-and-so to using, and if someone else objects he or she pays for so-and-so not to sing. I thinks it's rather embarrassing for the performers. A policeman (native) was there, and he paid twice few a maypole (lance to be repeated, and when, for the third time, he had no money, he' paid on credit! The audience was awfully pleased when Helen, my little sister, went forward for my dad and paid for the national anthem, "Xisi Sikolela. Afrika" (I'm not sure of the spelling)

to be sung again . . Don't you think, having a pen-friend in another country is interesting, Peter Pan? I do," because one hears lots of interesting incidents about other lands, that one may not read in a book. Zcla Carter.
