REEIEF WORKER CAUGHT.
DOUBLE CHART IN HOTEL.
"He's not a bookmaker in the sense of the word," said Detective-Sergeant McHugh about Thomas Roach, who appeared in the Police Court yesterday, charged with carrying 011 the business of a bookmaker on April 21. •
Defendant, for whom Mr. K. C. Aekins appeared, pleaded guilty. Detective-Sergeant MeHugh said Detective Brady, while in a city hotel oil April 21, observed Koaeli laying doubles at £1 10/ to a shilling. Roach told the detective that he was only trying to make a little extra money. There was nothing previously known against him. Mr. Aekins said Roach was a married man with a wife and two children and was employed on relief work at £17/0 per week. This was the first double lie had ever run and on being "struck," he immediately paid out. The magistrate pointed out that Roach was liable to a line not exceeding £500.
Roach was lined £4 and was allowed two weeks in which to pay.
