SHOOTING SEASON.

ROTORUA PROSPECTS. LIBERATION OP PHEASANTS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, Friday. It is difficult to forecast the prospects for the shooting season, which opens in this district on May 1. Reports are meagre regarding most classes of birds, nevertheless the Department of Internal Affairs has done a certain amount of good work this year. Over 450 fine strong pheasants have been liberated for the season in various parts of the district, and the indications are that they have done well. Reports from Taupo and Bay of Plenty areas state that ducks are to be seen in good numbers upon the lakes an dlagoons. Ivorito, Waiau and Ohouia lagoons are said to be carrying many birds, but the big Whakahi lagoon, at one time a very popular resort, has largely dried up since the big earthquake, and sport there must suffer accordingly. Californian quail appear to have increased this season, but the Virginian quail are protected.
