THE SOCCER CODE.

CHAMPIONSHIP OPENS. FULL PROGRAMME TO-MORROW. TRAMS AND THISTLE ATTRACTION. To-morrow will see the formal opening of the senior competition in the Soccer code and all ten teams will be engaged. The principal games will be played on Blandford Park, which is reported to be in excellent condition. At headquarters the babies of the grade and the most experienced players will be on view. The first match is between Comrades, yho have just reached senior status from the lowest grade—a record of progress and | ability that is a credit to the club. Their ' opponents will be Ponsonby, who have also got together a team with several of their juniors who have carried the club ff colours through the lower grades to the top ru&g, and combine keenness and promise with ability. The game starts; at 1.30 and a lively encounter is likely. The principal game on the programme will be between the old rivals, Thistle ami Tramways, who will kick-off at 3 p.m. The latter have been more or less resuscitated on the lines of the team that won the premiership of New Zealand a few seasons ago, and it is stated that this step is intended to demonstrate that the players have lost none of their talents. Thistle have secured several young players, who will be blended with their more seasoned members, and a strong and vigorous eleven will be on view. The encounter should prove full of zest and pood football, and certainly the best attraction for an opening match. Three matches will be played on outside grounds. Onehunga will entertain the newly-founded North Shore United, which is a blend of Shore and Belmont; Y.M.C.A. will be the guests of New Lynn for the opening of the season; and Abels, also newoomers to the senior grade, will receive their baptism at Walker Park, where they will meet last season's "babies," Glen Innes.
