TRADE AGREEMENT.
DOMINION AND U-S-A.
" MATTER OF URGENCY."
That it is a matter, of urgency for the Government.to open up negotiations with the United States was' the opinion of members of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at a meeting this morning. The matrfcer arose when the report of the importers' section committee was ■under discussion. The'committee urged
that no delay should take place in mak- * ing reciprocal arrangements '■ with the United States. Experience had shown that Australia had frequently "stolen a march" on New Zealand in the matter of negotiating trade agreements. The chairman, Mr. Harvey Turner, said the United States was at present arranging, a trade treaty. with Canada. The chamber felt that New Zealand should make -some • negotiations with America, and it was necessary to urge upon the Government the seriousness of the. position in that New Zealand might he too late to, make the necessary .arrangements. A member of the chamber pointed
out that England now- had under consideration agreements with '20 other nations. There was a; danger that New Zealand would miss, any benefit arising from such agreements. It was decided to write to the Government emphasising the urgency-of opening Up negotiations with the United States. ■ ■
