ACTION OF PROTEST.
! NO COMMITTEE ELECTED. I '; A meeting of over 20 householders refused to appoint a committee at Mangere East School on Monday night as a protest against the policy of the Education Department in reducing allowances to the school committee for the maintenance of services at the school. When nominations were called for the committee, five names were submitted. Before the election was held, the meeting decided to discuss the position resulting-from the reduction in allowances. It was decided that the task of carrying on essential services at the school was beyond the capacity of any committee, as, after paying for cleaning, the committee had only £11 left. "The committee would simply be an agency to raise funds locally which should be provided by the Department," said one householder. "It is futile to pass resolutions which are not heeded by the Department, and the only practical form of protest is for parents to refuse to elect any committee." The meeting was abandoned. Three members •were elected, but they cannot function as a committee.
