NECESSITY.
THE MOTHER OF INVENTION. (Copied by Phyllis Roycroft. Waihi.) A crow was almost dying of thirst when, he spied a pitcher at no great distance. When he came up to it, however,. he found that it was nearly empty, the little water in it wag. so low that, try as he might, lie was unable to reach it. Thereupon he tried to break the pitcher, then to overturn it, but his strength was not sufficient to do one or the other. At last, seeing a number of small pebbles close by, he took these and dropped them one by one into the pitcher until the water rose to the brim and he was able to quench his thirst.
