j Takapuna Rangiuia (Mrs. Teeke|Maki) attended the Women's Institute meeting at Felpbam, Bognor, on March 8, states an English' paper. • * » • Miss Judy Bourn was hostess at a bridge party on Saturday in :hbnouf of Miss Eileen Freeman. Amongst those present were Mesdames Freeman, King, Haig, and Misses Freeman (3), Louise Jourdain and Leila Maher. • * * • The Remuera branch of the W.C.T.U. held a meeting on Anzac Day, when Mrs. Hugh Kasper presided. Sister Grace and the president addressed the meeting on "The True Spirit of Anzac Day." Mrs. Ready was hostess for the afternoon. • # • • A coming-of-age party was held at the residence of Mrs. F. Buckingham, at Matangi, on Tuesday evening, in honour of her daughter Elsie. A very happy time was spent by a large number of friendk and relatives, and the evening was passed with games and competitions. The birthday cake was made and iced by Mr. H. J. Ironside, of Ellerslie. » « * • There was a good attendance of members at the last meeting of the Manurewa League of Mothers, when Mrs. E. S. McCallum presided. The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs. A. Roberts, who gave an interesting address on the "Romance of Food." Mrs. Pilcher rendered a solo, and Mrs. Roberts gave the thought for the month. Afternoon tea, and a competition, won by Mrs Johnson, concluded the afternoon. The hostesses were Mesdames Thomson, Sinclair and Rees. • • * • The ladies' committee of the Grey Lynn and Arch Hill Ex-Servicemen's Club held a successful card evening and flag 500 at St. Columba Hall,- when there were about forty tables full. The room looked pretty with coloured flags, and a large king flag - on every table. The winning table comprised Mr. and Mrs. Brady and Mrs. Trisney. The novelty prize was "won by Mrs. O'Sullivan, Mrs. Stokes, and Mr. Young, the cash prize biding won by Miss M. Torrins, of Mount Albert. Mee- ! dames Cossey, Holdsworth, Henderson, \ Taylor, Torrens and O'Sullivan were i responsible for the very excellent even- . ing, and provided supper. The ladies' i committee would appreciate any gifts of 11 warm clothing for children of ex-service I; man in the district. |<

Mrs. Burges Watson is in charge of the committee organising the ball in aid of \the society for the prevention of cruelty to animals. The GovernorGeneral and Lady Blodisloe have signified their intention of being present, and during the evening an entertainment will be given by the sailors of the warships, which will all be in port at that time, and special dance music will be given by the combined bands of the two warships. * • * • The Overseas League Club rooms were gay with autumn flowers on Monday evening, when man jong and bridge were played. The prize bridge winner was Miss Kennedy. Among those playing were: Mesdames Colwill, Stuart, Smart, Angwin, Berry, French, Misses Earl, Ariell, Longdill, Stuart, Craig (2), Harty (2), Say, Kennedy and Montgomery. * » * * . At the Otahuhu Public Hall on Saturday evening the Otahuhu Old Time Dance Club continued its series of benefit dances, and a well-filled hall, composed of patrons from the outer suburbs, spent a happy evening dancing the old favourites. The club orchestra responded to many encores. The hall was gaily decorated with streamers and bells, and the supper arrangements were in the efficient hands of Mesdames Parker, Taggart and Markwick. The Monte Carlo prizes were won by Miss E. Craig and Mr. Greenwell, Miss Miller and Mr. North, Mies McDonnell and Mr. Ritchie. Amongst those present were Mesdames J. Ritchie, Craig, Stokes, Parker, Taggart, Castles, Kitto, Carr, McDonnell, Markwick, Page and Lindner, * * * » A farewell gathering was held on Monday evening by members of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild to bid farewell to Miss Marie Marsack, who leaves for Singapore this week. During the evening card games were- played and won by Mesdames Gibson, Worrall, and Miss Clarke. Supper was served by Miss Lorna Gibson and assistants. There were present: Mesdames Marsack, E. Milsom, E. Gibson, Bullimore, Wallis, S. W. Tyler, A. W. Storey, H. Sewell, Livingstone, A. A. Midd's, Kindred, C. A. Wannight, R. Lawford, L. Clark, H. R. Vickery, R. B. Davison, F. M. Worrall, T. N. Smallwood, M. A. Hayes, G. Bowden, A. Clark and Henson; Misses Robinson, M. and C. Marsack, Clarke, E. Veall, J. Campbell, E. Worrall, M. Middleton, L. Gibson, S.. Vickery, G. Hamilton, K. Maloy, K. Kinkela and J. Craven. Miss Marsack's position as hon. secretary will be filled by Miss J. Craven, with Mrs. G. Bowden as organising secretary. * # * • The annual meeting of the Parents' Club of the Otahuhu Pree Kindergarten was held last Monday evening, the president, Mr. A. Pilcher, presiding over a good attendance of parents. The balance-sheet showed the kindergarten's financial position to be very.sound, and the report, presented by the head teacher, Miss Morrilleau, was satisfactory. The fund for the acquisition of a site and the erection of a modern school, for which purpose the club was originally formed, stands at £136. This amount should be considerably greater, but owing to the withdrawal of the Government subsidy, money which normally would have been credited to this fund, ! has had to be utilised for maintenance, j During the year, social functions, which } included a most successful fancy dress ball, were held, and resulted in the sum t of £33 being raised. A letter was received from the kindergarten's adminis- ' trative committee expressing its thanks for the clubfs generous assistance. During the evening, Mr. T. W. Meld, on behalf of the parents, thanked the president and the committee for their services during a very difficult year, while the committee recorded the services' of Mrs. Mayo, one of its members, who did not seek re-election. The following committee, was elected: T. W. Nield, Jackson, Carsons, Kemp, Montgomery, Craig, Warrington, Collins, Campbell, Misses Morrilleau and Lane, Messrs. A. Pilcher, T.. W.. Nield, Dawson and Drumm. At the conclusion of the meeting Mr. Dawson sang a solo and Misses Morrilleau and Lang sang a duet, after which supper was served. j
