COMMITTEES CHOSEN. HOUSEHOLDERS' MEETINGS. RAISING OF SCHOOL AGE. The annual meetings of householders for the election of school committees were held on Monday evening. Many protests were made against the raking of the school age to exclude five-year-old children from the schools. In several cases no hallot was required. The committees are as follows:— CITY CENTRAL. The combined Beresford and Napier Street schools' meeting returned, unopposed, for the ensuing year the following committee :—Messrs. R. Appleton, A. Alfield, H. Benfell, R. H. Beattie, J. L. Capill, H. R. Coleman, W. T. Culpitt, A. E. Hall, G. Tylcoat TONSONBY A meeting of twelve householders, with Mr. R. A. R';w presiding, re-elected, unopposed, as committee : —Messrs. T. Aitken, TV. T. Brown, W. H. Fortune, S. H. Leyland, R. C. Renncr, R. A, Rew, \V. J. Searle, A. K. Wetherilt and J. Wilson. Mr. Rew was re-elected chairman, Mr. Brown deputychairman, and Mr. S. A. Cleal, secretary and treasurer. The report showed a balance of £119 In hand, and reminded householders of the forthcoming concert as a means of raising £100 for the dental nurses' services. NEWTON. The following committee was elected :— Mrs. S. Keats (chairman), Mr. F. W. Bolwell (treasurer). Mrs. M. Parker, Messrs. T. Blair, K. D. Owen, C. S. Morris, W. Sargent, J. Taberner and S. Wrathall; secretarv. Mr. A. Jenkin. The report announced a credit balance of £30, despite reduced capitation as the.result of a drop in the rolls of 94 in the central school and 60 in the west school, causing the removal of a teacher from each school. MOUNT EDEN. There was an attendance of about 80 householders at Mount Eden, Mr. L. E. Faulkner presiding. The report referred to a serious drop in the attendance, which was attributed to a large number of children going on to the "Kowhai District High School, and the raising of the school age. The following committee was elected: — Messrs. L. E. Faulkner (chairman), F. M. Ball. A. J. Clanfield, R. Cowan, W. Gaeth, A. W. Probert, R. Sheffield, F. W. Sinclair, D. Millar (secretary). It was decided to ask the Mount Eden Borough Council to supply water to the school free, or at as low a rate as possible. GREY LYNN. The good work being done at the Grey Lvnn and Westmere schools was mentioned In the report presented at the Grey Lynn meeting. In the proficiency examinations Grey Lynn secured 63 certificates and Westmere 42. All necessary expenditure had been met and the purchase of a quantity of stationery had eased the burden on parents. The meeting recommended the committee to continue its efforts to maintain the dental clinic on a voluntary contribution system. The meeting passed a resolution urging the whole time employment of ex-trainecs in the schools to which tbey were sent, and drawing the attention of the Prime Minister and the.Minister of Education to the serious effects of the rationing system at present in vogue In the schools. The meeting requested that such Increase should be made in the education vote as to permit whole time employment. The following committee was elected:— Messrs. W. H. Newton (chairman and treasurer). C. Bishopric, G. H. Hlscock. W. Hickson, D. Mann, W. H. Atkinson. Mrs. A. Vanghan, Mrs. E. Henderson and Mrs. F. E. Swan (secretary). EPSOM. The Epsom school report showed 1 that extensive improvements had been made to the grounds during the year. This- 'wcork was financed mainly by the proceeds of a school fair in December last, organised by Mr. N. Speary, which realised over £100. The following were elected to the committee :—Messrs. I. G. Gray (chairman), R. A. Denny, R. W. Kirkpatrick. T. O. Mynott, P. J. Pring, N. McL. Speer, F. J. W. Taylor, A. Worrall. Mrs. A. McNair. Mr. Worrall, who was elected for his fiftieth year, was heartily congratulated by householders. CORNWALL PARK. At the Cornwall Park meeting, Mr. A. E. Pierce presided over an attendance of 30. The following committee was elected: — Messrs. T. A. Holdsworth (chairman), F. E. Traynor (secretary), E. C. Kirk. G. A. lieKendrick, G. Denton. W. I. Handcock, N. B. Wells, F. G. Marshall, F. W. Hayes. ROYAL OAK. The following committee was elected :— Messrs. S. Vella chairman), W. E. Wells (secretary). W. M. Darley, W. J. Bower, V. C. G. Potter, F. P. Hewitt. A. W. A. Sweetnian, C. J. Kean, W. Wells. The report stated that the school had been placed in the highest grade for efficiency TE PAPAPA. The following committee was elected :— Mr. F. C. Pace (chairman); Mrs. S. Jameson (secretary), Mrs.' M. Hankins. Messrs. H. Dawson, F. Gilchrist, A. Neail, W. Norris, G. Ronson and D. Stow. PAPATOETOE. There was a large attendance of householders at Papatoetoe school, the Rev T. H. Roseveare presiding. \ A resolution of protest was passed concerning proposals to remove the scholars of Standard VI. to the intermediate section of the Otahuhu Technical School. The meeting was of the opinion that it was not in the best interests of education and scholars generally to have academic and technical training In one institution, such as was the case at the Otahuhu High School. The following committee members were elected:—Mr. A. G. Grlnter (chairman!, Messrs. A. T. Mcßeth. J. T. Dawson. D. Ormiston, and Dr. J. J. Valentine (former members'*, and Messrs. J. W. Mayall, J. Sanderson, D. Kirk, and R. Miles. ELLERSLIE. Mr. E. C. Browne presided over about - 70 householders at the Ellerslie meeting. It was reported that the year had been a satisfactory one. The new committee was urged to investigate the possibility of constructing swimming baths. The new committee are: Messrs A. G. Parsons (chairman), J. C. Trebilcock (secretary), D. E. E. Casley, D. Chapman, G. A. Day, W. Lyon. A. H. McIntyre, E. A. Rogers, and J. J. Toy. TAKAPUNA. At Takapuna the following committee was elected unopposed:—Messrs. T. Hanna (chairman), C. Brinsden, G. H. E. Collins, W. List, T. Rice, H. Strude, G. H. E. Tucker, and the Rev. J. Hiddlestone (secretary). Mr. A. Harris, M.P. for Waitemata, presided. A resolution was passed protesting against the legislation which raised the school admission age. MEADOWBANK. About 25 householders attended the meeting at the Meadowbank School. The election resulted as follows:—Messrs. C. E. Merson (chairman), J. Cardwell (secretary), W. S. Adams (treasurer), T. Attwood, W. Alexander, R. P. Hookbam. P. Lornie, W. C. Rhodes, and P. D. Wright. EDENDALE. The report of the Edendalc School Committee was presented to a meeting of about 100 householders presided over by Mr. J. H. Wilson. The Bible instruction system was reported to be working very satisfactorily, over 90 per cent of the children attending. Considerable improvements had been carried ont to the school grounds, principally under the No. 5 scheme, and £66 had been raised for this purpose by a carnival. A resolution was carried . supporting the efforts of the Kowhai Junior High School Committee to retain the three-years course, as the reduction to two years would mean a serious loss to those pupils who could not afford a secondary school education. The following committee was elected:— Mr. A. Gear (chairman), Mrs. M. D. Bailey (secretary and treasurer), Mrs. M. E. Waugh, Messrs. J. Cronk, N. Fairweather, L. E. Hull, M. B. Heffernan, O. F. Gear, and J. L. Burrows. MATJNGAWHAU. Mr. D. H. Thomas presided at the meeting of the Maungawhau householders. There were about 100 present. The following committee was elected: —Messrs. L. S. Piper (chairman), E. M. Edgar (secretary and treasurer), R. P. Bissett, C. J. Kent Johnston. W. J. Linkhorn, H. Martin, R. T. Sando, J. G. Turner and J. WilliamSpecial reference was made to the good service of five retiring members. Messrs. G E. Spooner. R. J. Mills, A. D. Whitehead, D H. Thomaß and J. Mackie. The annual report referred to the great improvements made at the school grounds with the assistance of the Mount Eden Borough Council; and relief labour.

GLEN EDEN. The following committee -was elected: — Messrs. W. G. Bond (chairman), S. Glegg (secretary-treasurer), A. C. Coker, D. B. Guildford, 11. Howell, J. Ingram, W. J. Elshaw, W. H. Clark, J. H. Hollinger. MANGERE. The following committee was elected: — Messrs. W. Wakefield chairman), A. W. Westney (secretary), G. Britton, G. W. Cox, F. H. Forward, G. Knight, J. S. Bothwell, J. Evans, A. E. Trayes. ST. HELIER'S. The St. Helier's meeting, over which Mr. H. Kiddle presided,' was attended by 33 householders. The following were elected to the committee:—Messrs. D. B. Smith H. E. Kretschmar (secretary and treasurer), E. Hogan, A, King, H. Farrow, H. Dodd, Mesdames D. Putt, D. B. Smith, O. Gisby. KOHIMARAMA. An increase in the roll at Kohimarama to 220 was reported for the year. Forty householders attended the meeting, over which Mr. J. H. Hubber presided. The following were elected to the committee: — Messrs. J. H. Hubber (chairman), T. Kilfoylc (secretary and treasurer), R. Clarke, W. McLaren, j. C. Rowe, R. G. Wild and Mrs. J. H. Hubber. GRAFTON. Regret at the decrease in pupils and an appeal to parents within the district to send their children to the school were made at the meeting at Grafton on Monday. A resolution was passed making compulsory the teaching of swimming. The committee elected was as follow: —Messrs. W. .T. Edwards (chairman), F. Atkins, R. T. Brown, A. W. Bunker, W. R. Childs, E. M. Childs, E. C. Harvey, J. A. Mattson, R. Wilkinson. GLADSTONE. A large attendance of householders at the Gladstone meeting heard rt report which emphasised the good work done through the No. 5 unemployment scheme at the school. Levelling and re-sowing, the erection of ornamental walls and a fine memorial gate had been completed. The report also laid emphasis on the school's athletic and scholastic attainments. A decision to hold a school fair in two months' time to complete improvements and replenish the library was taken. The committee was chosen as follow:—Mr. A. C. Gallagher (chairman). Mr. S. Dimery (secretary), Mr. H. C. Brown (treasurer), Mrs. F. Mcßride, Messrs. C. H. Cowdery, L. C. H. Dawson, C. Dunn, E. M. Walters and A. Le .Bherz. PARNELL. Mr. A. Burns, formerly chairman of the Auckland Education Board, presided over an attendance of about 100 householders. The following committee was elected: Mrs. A. G. Harris (chairman), Mrs. A. M. Sullivan (secretary), Mrs. C. M. Neal, Messrs. M. E. Jones, W. Morrison, N. McDougall. G. I. Pocock, A. Morris and G. Cain. Mrs. Neal and Mr. Cain tied for the last place with Mr. W. G. S. Brookes. The final selection was made bv drawing the three names from a hat, with the result that Mrs. Neal and Mr. Cain were declared elected. STANLEY BAY. Mr. W, K. Howitt presided over a large meeting. The annual report showed that, owing to the new school age regulation, the grade had fallen from 5A to 4C. The number on the roll was now 229, and the committee's credit balance stood at £3"J. Mr. A. Bullians, the new headmaster, formerly of Epsom, was welcomed at the meeting. The following kindergarten committee was elected : Mrs. W. S. Putwain, and Messrs. C. M. Browne, R. T. Anderson, J. B. Morton and P. J. Shcehan. As the nominations for the committee did not exceed the required number the following were elected : Messrs. C. M. Browne (chairman), J. T. McGrane, E. W. Bain, C. J. McHattie, J. B. Morton, P. J. Sheehan, T. M. Pollard, B. S. Woolacott and R. T. Anderson (secretary and treasurer). DBVONPORT. Only one householder attended the meeting. The report showed that the attendance had dropped from 521 to 458 on account of the school age alteration. Out of 75 pupils presented for the proficiency examination 72 gained certificates, three gaining certificates of competency. The lowering of the school grade necessitated the transfer of the headmaster, Mr. A. G. Menzies, also the assistant master, Mr. J. Woods, to other schools. The dental clinic report showed that during the year 420 children received treatment. The following committee was'elected : Messrs. R. N. Melville (chairman), F. W. Beck (treasurer), A. B. Carmichael, W. A. Cramp. C. Farquharsou. A. W. Jo'ughin, A. W. Parker, H. J. Richards and R. O. Vause (secretary). NOBTHCOTE. The Mayor, Mr. R. Martin, .presided over a small attendance at Northcote. The report placed on record appreciation of the provision of hot cocoa for the children by the ladies' committee and the supervision of ground improvements by Mr. H. Shaw. The following committee was elected: Messrs. H. Shaw (chairman), T. G. Fielder (treasurer),F. W. Wilkes, A. C. Pugh, F. I'. Tack, J. Fawcett, L. G. Gimblett (secretary), Mesdames A. E. Taylor and V. M. Blake. BELMONT. There was no election at Belmont, the following committee being returned unopposed : Messrs. Carpenter Arthur (chairman), J. L. Nettleton (secretary), O. J. Nilsson, F. D. Otway, G. S. Wildon, E. J. Wiseman, R. E. Graham, A. M. Walters, E. A. Smith. It was reported to the 60 householders present thnt the Nelson system of Bible reading had been introduced, in response to the representations of a large majority of theparents. Owing to the raising of the school entrance age the roll bad fallen from 541 to 508. The finances were in a sound condition, strict economy having been observed, and parents having assisted in the matter of raising funds. BIRKENHEAD. A large attendance at Birkenhead was presided over by the Mayor, Mr. G. Mills. The following committee was elected : Messrs. W. E. Roberts (chairman), N. J. Campbell (treasurer), L. H. Ha.vman, K. R. Taylor, B. Dlngley. F. Tothill, C. E. Chambers (secretary), Mesdames J. Prickett and R. R. Haymaji. The report revealed that the school was lowered in grade as a result of the raising of the school entrance age. The new layout of the school grounds was nearing completion, a feature being the school garden. The establishment of an agricultural class at the district high school was recommended. BIRKDALE. A meeting of about 60 householders at Birkdale elected the following committee: Messrs. T. M. Shepherd (chairman), E. W. Clay (secretary and treasurer), G. Collins, W. Wood, M. Hopkins, H. Mcllaigh, and J. Gummer. REMUERA. ' At Remuera the statement of accounts showed an excess of 'receipts over expenditure of £45. It was reported that tlie average school roll was shown at 640 and the average attendance as 606. All 85 candidates presented for the proficiency examination had passed. The school had been prominent in all branches of sport, and over 100 pupils had gained distance swimming certificates. It was decided that a protest be sent to the Government concerning the raising of the school age, it being stated that the restriction was to the detriment of the children, and not in the best interests of education. The following committee was elected unopposed: Messrs. A. V. Burcher, T. W. Cocks, W. J. Culpan, E. W. Inder, W. E. Lewisham, L. V. Moses, W. W. Murray, and A. M. Paterson. As the nominations were one short of the required number it was decided to ask the Education Board to fill the vacancy. NEW LYNN. About 70 householders attended the meeting at New Lynn, and the following committee was elected : Messrs. J. Finlow, T. Mortimer, J. Neil, F. Carter, L. Crutcher, J. Johnson, R. J. Martin, R. Cecil, W. Trigg. OTAHUHU. * Mr. C. R. Petrie presided over a fair attendance at the meeting of the Otahuhu District School. No election was necessary, as only the required number of nominations were received. ' The committee comprises: Messrs. C. R. Petrie (chairman), L. Hubbard, A. T. McLaren, J. M. Deas, A. Patrick, H. Dickie, A. K. Murray, R. E. McCullough, and W. Lovatt. PAPAKURA. There were only two householders and six committee members present at the Papakura District School meeting. The following members were elected to the committee: Rev. W. C. Wood (chairman), A. L. Turner (secretary), Mrs. C. McConnell, Messrs. G. T. Hollinger, G. Kernot, V. Hardman, A. Anderson and G. W. Jackson. The committee is one short. OWAIRAKA. Mr. F. B. Watts presided at the annual meeting of Owairaka householders. The following committee was elected: — Messrs. F. B. Watts (chairman), W. Weaver (secretary), H. A. Anderson, E. H. Day, R. Ferner, T. S. Hadlow, E. G. McKeich, W. Shearer, J. H. Webb. It was stated in the report that there was a possibility of arrangements being made with the Sandringham School dental clinic for the Owairaka pupils to receive attention. \ jr . .. A recommendation was made that the Nelson system of Bible reading in schools should be introduced.

NEWMARKET. A resolution of protest against the rationing of work among teachers and a decision to advocate the establishment or a kindergarten at the school were made at the meeting of Newmarket householders. The following committee was elected : — Mrs. M. M. Dreavcr, Messrs. T. Watts (chairman), W. J. Cross. L. B. Goldwater, L. Randall. J. I/. Surney, H. Gustafsson, C H. Webb, H. Wilson. MOUNT ALBERT. About 30 householders attended the meeting at the Mount Albert School, presided over by Mr. A. Wilson. The annual report stilted thnt the school had lost the services of Mr. J. S. Ramsay, who had been headmaster for the past twelve years. He had been succeeded by Mr. E. T. Snell, formerly of Pukekohe School. Under No. 5 scheme two workers had been employed maintaining the grounds. A kindergarten had been opened at the school with an attendance of 42. The balancesheet showed a credit balance of £ 10. The following committee was elected : — Messrs. B. Brigham (chairman), S. Wood (secretarv), E. H. Page (treasurer), F. J. Mansell, T. Ivil. L. Graham, F. McGeehan, A. Burns, C. Nicklin. MOUNT ROSKILL. Pupils of the Mount Roskill school were stated to have done well, both In examinations and in sport, in the annual report presented to a meeting of about 40 householders. Mrs. I. M. Benthall presided. The following committee was elected:— Mesdames I. M. Benthall (chairman), D. L. Dale (secretary). G. A. Jenkins (treasurer), Messrs. B. C. Moody, W. G. Deucher, W. •Towsey, W. V. Quane, G. H, Morgan, C. Gerrard. BRIXTON ROAD. At Brixton Road the following committee was elected :—Messrs. J. Russell, J.P. (chairman), A. Roberts (secretary and treasurer), S. E. Forbes, C. D. Hartnoll, L. Wallace, F. J. Lynch, J. McDonald, A. Wright, W. C. Uutting. It was reported that £1196 had been spent on ground improvements under No. 5 scheme during the past two years and- that the work was expected to be completed in another six months. PANMURE. Mr. C. Gatward presided over an attendance of 35 householders. The following committee 'wns elected:—Messrs. W. O. Hall (chairman), W. F. Woods (secretary), Mrs. A. Cummiugs, Messrs. J. A. Henderson, A. F. Dunn, H. L. Monahan, T. F. Cleveland. AVONDALE. Great interest was taken at the meeting of the Avondale School Committee, upwards of 400 householders being present. Many failed to secure admission. A complete Labour ticket stimulated interest in the voting, but the whole ticket was rejected and seven of the old committee were re-elected. The following were elected: —Messrs. H. A. V. Bollard (chairman), H. A. Harrison (secretary and treasurer), J. Johnston, G. Porritt. »P. J. Brown. Mrs. M. Richardson, ♦Messrs. C. Westren, P. Adams, A. Pringle. (•New members.) AVONDALE SOUTH. The following committee was elected :— Messrs. E. Gill (chairman), J. W. Bissctt (secretary), Mesdames Gill, Bissett and Mr. Hunt. CAMPBELL'S BAT. The following committee was elected at Campbell's Bay:—Messrs. F. Vosper (chairman), A. Wolstenholme (treasurer), L. Armitage, W. Mitchell, W. Inglis and H. Hockiu (secretary). VAUXHALL. Little interest was taken in the meeting held at Vauxhall, only two householders attending, in addition to the members of the committee. The new committee elected was: Messrs. H. H. Watkins (chairman), A. E. Carrington, J. Gray, H. Ellis, A. L. Griffiths, C. A. Massey, A. D. McLaren, E. P. Titchener and E. T. Brown (secretary). PUKEKOHE. Thirteen attended the householders' meeting at Pukekohe, Mr. J. Hunniford presiding. A resolution was passed protesting against the Government's action in raising the eligible school age to six years. The following commirtee was elected :— Messrs. J. Patterson (chairman), W. H. S. Gee ,(secretary), C. Blair, V. Morris, J. Hunniford, W. T. Pearsall, S. Douglas, J. Comrie and Rev. J. H. Bailey. THAMES. Mr. J. H. Hodge was appointed chairman, and Mr. W. E. Claris secretary. There was no ejection.
