WATER IN MILK.

PROSECUTION AT OTAHUHU.

Three charges of having sold for human consumption milk which contained added water were brought against Stephen Walter Carter, a farmer, of Panmure, who appeared before Mr. F. H. Levien, S.M., in the Otahuhu Magistrate's Court on Monday. Defendant denied the charges, and alleged that the milk had been treated after it left his hands. N. F. Furncss, inspector to the Department of Health, stated that one can was found to have contained 20 per cent water. Defendant, in evidence, said he was of opinion that someone had tampered with the cans, to put the blame on him. The magistrate said adulterated milk had been sold and the liability was absolute. Whoever sold, milk had to see it was up to standard. Defendant was fined £4 and ordered to pay costs amounting to £2 12/8. % He was allowed one month to pay.
