EASTER BOWLING.

CENTRE TOURNAMENTS.

TWO CONTESTS FINISHED

OTHER FINALS NEXT SATURDAY.

Post-section play was continued yesterI day afternoon in the four separate J tournaments that had been running during the holidays, and the finals were reached in the executive fours and the first-year fours, in each of which only two rounds had to. be played. In the Easter fours and junior fours, however, a fairly common result followed from the green being exceptionally keen, in that by the time two rc-ands were played it was calculated that it would 'be impossible to complete a - third 'round before dark. Accordingly the tournament committee met the competitors concerned, there being the usual reluctance to facing the necessity for dividing the games and playing the last few heads' next day. After a full discussion it was decided to abandon the original .intention of playing the final of the Blaster fours to-day, and to postpone the semi-finals till 10 o'clock next Satuiday commencing the final at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. The final in the junior fours will also be played on Saturday afternoon. The executive fours provided a very close final, but eventually Auckland defeated Rocky Nook by one point, the scores being:—W. M. Matheson, W. J. Campbell, G. J. Mackay, K. S. Macky 19, v. J. Kayes, W. Williams, W. Bain, W. J. Pearce 18. The game was exactly the opposite of the one in the morning, when Rocky Nook defeated Mount Albert by 29 to 18, for in the morning Rocky Nook had scored only 3 to Mount Albert's 15 by the seventh head, whereas in the afternoon Rocky Nook led off with a great start. Apparently their misfortune was in being the first >to reach 13, for they got there 'by the tenth head, when Auckland were only 7, but the latter then scored on the next five heads, and succeeded in warding off a strong attack from Pearce and his men during the latter part of the game. In presenting the cup and the trophies the president of the centre, Mr. Raymond Sheath, specially congratulated Dr. Mackv and Mr. Matheson on their success, for they had_ only taken to the game in 1926, the same year as he himself had started, and now they had won an important championship, whereas he was still struggling to win a tournament. It was only two years since Rocky Nook had won this event, but it was a great triumph for the parent club to win, as they had not competed- for many years. As a matter of fact the last time Auckland entered a rink was in 1926, the team being J. E. Dicketts, 8. Coldicutt, C. Muston and T. Kirk, but they got . only 5 wins in the 12 rounds played that year. The final of the first-yeax fours resulted in almost a runaway for Kaukapakapa, who left Edendale 12 down with two heads to play. The latter got, only two, the final .score being, with one head unplayed:—W. Drinnan, J. Hooper, L. Dnnnan, C. Earle 22, v. P. Durrant, F. Noad, E. Kimber, J. Credin 12. In presenting the challenge shield and the trophies. Mr. Sheath remarked that although he did not wish Edendale any harm, he thought everybody was pleased to see the victory going to. the youngest club in the centre, and the most distant in the north. He was astonished _to see such'a young man as skip of a winning rink in a big tournament, and_ still more surprised when he met his wife for the first time that afternoon, but he had come to the conclusionLthat he had brought his young bride to the city for their honeymoon, so, he hoped they would regard the tournament as a good omen. The second round in the Easter fours resulted as follows: —H. Grocott, J. P. Mason, H. C; Clarke, G. Hv Carter (Carlton) 22, v. Hardio Neil, R. L. Wilson, GI H. Woolley, M. Walker (Auckland) 13; Taylor, McGregor, S. Jenkin, A. M.. Elliott (Carlton) 19, v. Higginson, Donaldson, R. C. Caady, E. S E. Buckley (Grey Lynn), 14; J. H. Wyatt< S. Bish, W. J. Short, P. A. Hoeking (Pukekohe). 23, v. H. Tattersall, W. Lloyd, C. Clews, W.. D. Kelly (Balmoral) 22; D. Sampson, ■J. C.' Duncan, R. Higgott, C. H. de Launay (Carlton) 26, v. W. J. Skinner, W. F. Hardley, F. McCarthy, I. Clarke (West End) 15. . _ In the semi-finals on Saturday morning Carter will meet, Elliott, and Hosking will meet de Launay, the presence of three Carlton skips" attracting a good deal of attention yesterday, as another indication of the strength of this popular clifb. Another Carlton rink will figure in the final; of the junior ..fours next Saturday afternoon, as the second round yesterday resulted as follows:—Duncan,"" Brownlee, Little, H. V. Johnston (Carlton) 23, v. Walsh, Rackett, Holland, C. Sampson : "VVaitemata) 12; Flinn, Koefoed, Hessey, R. Ellisdon (Devonport) 33, v. Walsham, , Morelahd, Revell, H. Burrows (Pukekohe) 5 11. In presenting the prizes for the , other competitions the president ;:j of the' . centre also made a ibrief reference to the t junior fours, remarking" that the; good L entries and t the evident'.enjoyment. of. the competitors must be taken' as aii 'indication that this, new experimental tournament tried this year had come to stay.
