LANDMARK DESTROYED. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, this (lay. One of the oldest landmarks in Kamo was completely destroyed by fire early yesterday morning. The building, which was in the main street, housed a combined butchery and grocery business. When the lessee, Mr. Harry McManus, closed the premises at 10 o'clock on Wednesday evening and left, everything appeared to be in good order. A taxi driver who passed at 1.20 a.m. saw nothing amiss, but a few minutes later the building was blazing furiously. It was demolished in less thaij an hour. About twelve months ago the insurance companies revised the policies for Kamo township, which is outside the Whangarei Fire Board's district, and has no water supply. Some covers were considerably reduced, and others, including the building destroyed, cancelled. The Wliitelaw estate, which owns the building, will lose by over £500.
