CHILDREN'S HOMES.
WHOSE RESPONSIBILITY ? REQUEST FOR ASSISTANCE. "If you support one orphanage you will have to help tliem all," remarked a member of the Auckland Hospital Board yesterday afternoon when a letter from the Manurewa Children's Home, asking for help in maintaining 30 children, was under discussion. The authorities at the home, -who had previously made similar application to the board and to the relief committee, asked that their appeal should he given further consideration. The chairman, Mr. W. Wallace, said that the first request from the home had been referred to the relief committee, who had refused to accept any liability in the matter. He suggested that the application should be referred back to the relief committee. Mr. Potter thought that the application should be referred to the finance committee.
"This is opening up a big question," commented Mr. W. K. Howitt. "We want a lead from tlie board."
Mr. W. C. "Wood said that if the board opened the door to one such institute it would have to open it to them all, and if that was the case the board in a short time would find itself faced with the maintenance of every Mich institution. That condition of affairs might eventually come, but in the present instance the board had to be particularly chary.
Mr. G. T. Parvin moved an amendment that tlie board's previous decision should be adhered to.
Mr. M. J. Savage said that the matter was one which had to he faced by someone, and the Minister of Health should be asked to state who was responsible.
When put to the vote tie amendment was earned.
