A FARMERS' CABINET.
The announcement that Mr. J. Bitchener, member for "Waitaki, has been appointed to the vacant Cabinet post, and given the portfolio of Public Works, calls for a strong protest. The objections to this appointment are twofold. Firstly, Mr. Bitchener has shown no . special qualifications for the position. Secondly, he is a country member, and Cabinet is already overwhelmingly rural in its interests, tastes and knowledge. This predominance of country interests was serious enough when Mr. Downie Stewart was a Minister, but now that he has gone, Cabinet ! is without a single representative of the city communities. Yet in filling the necessary, vacancy Mr. Coates prefers a member from the country, and a man not distinguished in any respect, to representatives of city interests, two at least of whom are suitably equipped for the position. The choice flagrantly ignores, the claims of the cities to. be given a fair share in the government of all, | and must render the position of the Coalition Government still more difficult. I
