That was one of the task's of'the cooks who made the huge cake for the party that Augustus, King of Saxony, gave in honour of Frederick William, King of Prussia, in June, 1730. The cake was the largest ever heard of in all the world's history. ■
The two kings met at a magnificent camp, and one of the many which Augustus arranged for the visiting monarch and his retinue was this famous cake. It was drawn into the camp by eight horses on a special wooden platform, With a splendid tent over it. AVe> know what the cake was made of, for besides the 5000 eggs and the ton of butter and sugar, it contained 30 bushels of good Hour, one ton of milk aivrl one ton of yeast. It is said special machinery was used to mix it, but wo do not know how it was baked though. It was not iced, but decorated instead with fancy biscuits, gingerbread and nuts.
Imagine the cheers of the 30,000 soldiers and the thousands of guests when this gigantic cake was drawn into the camp! Jt was ctit by a skilled carpenter, who used a knife so enormous that the handle rested on his shoulder as he pushed the blade into the huge cake.
