A 3JOTTBUS TIE.

CLOSE CONTESTS BY WAKATERES. The feature of the 1032-3 yachting season has undoubtedly been the rapid growth of the small classes and the very keen contests that have resulted in the Wakatere class. When it is recalled that Inst season there was not one boat bum of this class and that there are now at least 40 Wakateres. and several times this season 20 or more have started in a single race for their class, it justifies the conclusion that it is worth while helping this class or any other new class provided it Is a practical job in its dimension lines, sail area and general appearance. The impetus given to the Wakatere class bv the donation by Messrs. Walker and Hall of a cup for annual competition, was seen in the keen contests which took place both in the three heats and the final sailed last Saturday off Kohimarama. Tvine started in this race, being the placed boats in the heats sailed last month, and a close finish saw Wahine, well sailed by her owner A. Williamson, gain the trophy and miniature, and a cash prize by a margin of 36s from R. Nicholas' Waiata. with bare minutes between all of the fleet. The handicap race for boats not eligible for the Speedwell Cup final was also a good one. White Wings winning by a margin of 2m, only seconds separating some of the other boats on corrected time, and nine of the ten finished within 4m. The racing next day off Narrow ISecK Beach for the Collinsen Cup was even closer In a series of six races, the placings which were counted by a system of points, corresponding with the places gained at the finish, resulted in a dc-ad-heat between A. Williamson, the cup winner and B. Nicholas, the runner-up. A sail-off saw these two still level and it was finally decided to put on record their good performance and to bracket them as even on the cup which each will hold for six months.

AKARANA PROTESTS,

Several protests were dealt with by the Railing committee of the Afcarana, Club on Wednesday evening. The protest by Maybelle against Janet for an alleged breach of the port and starboard tack rule was considered. It was decided that Janet be disqualified—in that being on port tack she failed to keep clear of Mayhelle on starboard. Janet was advised that it was necessary to liy a flag of protest in the rigging. This rule is more honoured in the breech than in its observance, but it is a good one. . ; A protest against Kitty, winner of the Trevic Shield inter-club competition, was I received and as the second boat to finjEh was the club's representative, Trevic, the whole matter of the alleged foul was referred to the Takapuna Boating Club for its decision. The conditions require that all competitors must be under the age of 19 in this race. The Tamaki Club's representative did not know it was so restricted and wrote expressing hjs regret. The rules left no option and he was disqualified. . ,

FLEET OF FISHING LAUNCHES.

Some few months ago it was stated that an order had been, placed in England for a fleet of 40 motor fishing boats for a company operating on the northern coast of New Zealand. This has proved to be incorrect. The company concerned has decided to place the order locally, though on a smaller scale. The boats have been designed by Mr. Ernie Bailey, eldest son of Mr. Chas. Bailey. They are serviceable looking craft, 38ft overall, and will be powered with Diesel engines of British make. If the company extends, two vessels 110 feet long will be built from Mt Bailer's jflau.
