Zealand,. representing the shareholders': interests on the board, was to : day unanimously elected chairman in succession to Mr. Oliver Nicholson, of Auckland. . _____ i*m i Mr. Gibbs is a resident of Wellington and a banker of practically lifelong experience. He joined the service of the bank at Nelson in 1877 and subsequently opened up branches at Wakefield, Takaka, and Motueka. He was later transferred to the head office and was afterwards in Auckland, where he was accountant during the exacting years of the 'nineties. He was next engaged
on inspection duties over a number of years until his promotion to manager, first at Timaru and then at Duncdin. In 1919 he was appointed by the Government as chief auditor of the bank, and thus became a Government officer. Mr. Gibbs filled that position until 1924, when he resigned to contest a seat on the board of directors as shareholders' director.
Mr. Gibbs has long been identified with the business life of Wellington. He is a director of the Gear Meat Company and the Wellington Trust and Loan Company. His long first hand experience of economic and financial conditions in New Zealand and his association. with the Bank of New Zealand for some 55 years should prove of great value to the bank in the existing conditions of the Dominion. •
