MAYOR'S REBUKE.
" PERSONAL ATTACKS."
COUNCILLOR CRITICISED,
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.)
HAMILTON, this day.
A spirited rebuke to Mr. C. Lafferty, a candidate for the Mayoralty at the forthcoming election, was delivered by the Mayor, Dr. F. D. Pinfold, at a Borough Council meeting last evening.
Mr. Lafferty claimed that no reference had been made to tho unemployment question at the Municipal Conference at Rotorua. If some councillors had attended something might have been done. He assured the Mayor that he was not attacking him personally.
i "Half-truths do not get you anywhere, Mr. Lafferty," replied the Mayor. "You know well the question was discussed there, and a committee appointed to sit in Wellington and report later. I will not accept your statement about a personal attack on me. For two years, by questions and other means, you have attacked me, always stating that no personal attack is meant." ! Mr. Lafferty: Nothing has been done by the committee. Meanwhile people are half starving.
At several stages during» another debate Mr. Lafferty was called to order by the Mayor. He threatened to make disclosures publicly when he opened his campaign against the Mayor.
