"TO MAKE BENZINE."
YOUNG LABOURERS FRAUD.
REFUND OP MONEY ORDERED.
The admission that he- imposed on Achille Campi by falsely representing that he wanted to take out a patent to make benzine, and that he had 100 gallons of benzine at Wliangarei, thereby obtaining 15/ from Campi, was made by Norman John Murray, aged 28, labourer, in the Police Court this morning. Detective-Sergeant McHugh said that on March 28 Murray called at Campi's shop and told him lie had a patent to make benzine. He requested Campi to assist him, and asked Campi to give him 15/ for his fare to * Wliangarei. "While accused was speaking to complainant, another man entered the shop and offered to buy from Murray all the benzine he made," said Mr. McHugh. "No doubt this man entered the shop by arrangement with Murray to assist him in the fraud. No patent existed, and there was no benzine at Wliangarei. Murray lias previously been in trouble." The magistrate, after perusing Murray's list, remarked that he had only been out of gaol a month or two. Detective Mooro said Murray had been working well on a farm until two weeks ago, when he came to Auckland. The Salvation Army ofiicer said he was prepared to take charge of Murray for a while until he got back to his job in the country. In convicting Murray . and ordering him to come up for sentence within six months, and also to pay the 15/, the magistrate said that if ho got into trouble again ho would be sent to prison.
