PLEASURES.

(By Maureen Burns, Ostend, Waiheke

Island; age 16.)

I love to see the birds at evening, flying home to nest, To the distant hills and bushlands far away; And to see the sunset fading in the crimson west, Drawing to a close another day. I love to hear the crickets, chirruping in the grass, When dusk is creeping softly o'er the hills; And to listen to the breezes, whispering as they pass, Whispering of the spring and daffodils. I love to watch the stars, twinkling np on high, , Like myriad fairy lanterns, clear and bright; And to hear the breakers on the lonely seashore sigh, As they beat against the white cliffs through the night.
