VARSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS.
GinVIV TAKES FOUR TITLES. JEAN THOMSON THREE RECORDS. Winning five events at the annual swimming championships of the Auckland University College last night, Jean, Thomson established records in three of them. Miss Thomson is the only daughter of Mr. Walter Thomson, who recently retired from the position of assistant traffic manager of railways for the Auckland district. Sporting instincts are ingrained in the family, as Mr. Thomson was referee m the Springboks' Rugby match with Waikato in 1921, while his only son, Harvey (science master at Takapuna Grammar School), is an authority on. boxing. Brother and sister received their earner secondary education at the Palmerston North High School. Jean covered 100 yards freestyle in 74 l-ss, 50 yards freestyle in 31 4-5s and 66 2-3 yards breaststroke in 60 --ss. Ihe previous records were 775, 32 2-5s and 6 s respectively. She also won the 33 yards backstroke and the diving championships. Four of the men's championships were won bv W. I. Gunn. He'swam 100 yards freestyle in 645, 220 yards in 2.43 4-o, 440 vards in 6.7 3-5 and 100 yards breaststroke in 1.26 2-5, a record.
