AUCKLAND HARBOUR BOARD.
The Auckland Harbour Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. G. K. Hutchinson presiding. Disposal of Wash Water. —A request from the Auckland City Council for permission to extend the discharge pipe disposing of the wash water from the Niliotupu and Huia filters a further quarter of a mile into the harbour, and asking the board to waive the present requirements regarding the retention of sludge in the settlement ponds was referred to the Manukau committee with power to act. .Noxious 'Matter. — The Onehunga Borough Council wrote drawing the board's attention to the discharge into the Manukau Harbour of quantities of noxious matter from the various manufactories at' Westfield. The council asked : that steps, be taken to abate the nuisance, which was an "annoyance to residents further down the harbour, also to bathers. After .a report from the engineer had been read the matter was referred to the Manukau > committee with power to' act. . Returning Officer.—Mr. W. B. Smith was appointed returning officer for the election" of' members representing the payers of . st'ipping and wharfage dues, to 1 be. held oh May 2. Shipping.—Compared with the corresponding month last year, the shipping arrivals for March at the port of Auckland showed an increase of six vessels of- 82,476 gross tons. ' Intercolonial vessels showed, a decrease in arrivals of five, and large vessels a decrease' of four. Vessels arriving at the Manukau last month numbered 21, against 19 in March last year.
