It has been announced by the Sydney Stock Exchange that a new Companies' Bill of a comprehensive character is being prepared, and will be brought forward during the next session of the New South Wales Parliament. The existing legislation is a consolidation of measures going back to 1840. Though amendments have been made from time to time, the statutory provisions on the whole are regarded by both legal and commercial interests as being hopelessly out of date. The proposed new legislation is expected to follow closely on recent English and Queensland enactments, and on becoming effective, should furnish much-needed protection to investors.
