VICTORIA LEAGUE.
The annual report, which, will be presented to the members of the. Victoria League to-morrow evening, shows that the membership up to the end of last year was 1207, including life members and 102 unpaid subscriptions, making a total of 1309; 10 resignations have been received; 135 new members were elected and 13 new life members. A donation of £10 5/ had been received from two members for the life members' club. The report mentions the Empire Day celebrations and gives the thanks of the league to Mrs. It. Isaacs and Mrs. Kent, who made the wreaths. The league was represented at the special service at St. Matthew's Church on the King's Birthday and at the annual meeting in London by Mrs. Coleman. Reference is made to the success of the fine new rooms, towards which members had been generous with money and gifts. The Ever-Ready Committee, under Mrs. Bertha Rickerby, gave £15 from a bridge party, the girls' committee £10 and the men's committee £3 3/ towards the extra rent of the rooms. Three At Homes had been held in the Lyceum Club and the thanks of the league are given to Miss Kent and the girls' committee, who arranged the programmes. The Victoria League in England had asked the local branch to give hospitality to 28 British school boys, and the report mentioned that the thanks of the league were due to the 15 hostesses who gave the boys a warm welcome to their homes. Early this year the league entertained Miss S. Carner, 0.8. E., from London, and also*. Dame Sybil Thorndike.. The literature and education committees' report shows that the numbers of books, magazines and papers enclosed in parcels for the year were as follow:—To settlers, 23 scrapbooks, 1059 bookft, 083 magazines, 11GS papers. To school teachers, 275 scrapbooks, 791 books, 302 magazines, 800 papers. Total number forwarded, 298 scrapbooks, 1850 books, 1345 magazines, 1908 papers. Number of parcels sent to settlers, 147; school, 70; camps, 20. Total number of parcels during the year, 438. Special Christmas parcels, 340. Total for year, 778. Cost of postage on these for the year was £20 10/4. Books, magazines and papers have also been sent to the Hospital Auxiliary, Sailors' Home, Knox Home, 20 camps, City Mission, infirmary, etc. A fair amount of postage money is refunded by settlers and teachers, but this is not asked for, as eo many people are in poor circumstances; the rest is provided for .by donations. The report from the Ever-Ready Committee showed that their jumble sale made £49, £40 of which they gave to furnish the new rooms, aid that the donations from the sale of the cookery book of tried recipes had been £70. A house committee had also been formed, of which Mrs. Keeble is honorary secretary. The report for the sewing circle shows that the membership has risen from 30 to 00. The conveners are Mrs. E. Webb and Miss Scarborough. Reports will also be read from various branches of the girls' committee and the men's committee. One of them shows .that the toy circle lias 30 members who made 100 toy animals, 90 calendars and 150 sweet boxes, which were sent to country children as Christmas presents.
