TREVIC SHIELD CONTEST.

The annual inter-club contest in Z class boats for the Trevic Shield was sailed lust Saturday in a rather light breeze tight clubs were represented, and last year b winner Kitty, well handled by V. Field, the Cornwell Cup winner at Lyttelton last January, again won easily. Kitty was nominated by the Richmond Cruising Club. It is premature to congratulate the club on its win, as, unfortunately, Kitty is reported to have fouled the mark at the start. If she is not awarded the prize, the Akarana Club's nominee, Trevic, sailed bv Trevor Johnston, will win. Trevic was only home Is ahead of Me Too, the Ponson'by Club's boat, sailed by Max Pelliam. The outer end of the starting line was marked by the compass dolphin, and it is this mark Kitty is alleged to have fouled. It must be admitted that it is an unsatisfactory mark. With the wind as it was on Saturday, the high, solid dolphin shuts oft the wind on the lee side almost completely for some seconds from a boat as small as 12ft flin, the dolphin being about 50ft in circumference and 20ft high. \\itn the clubhouse almost on the waterfront, ir should be easy to keep a more suitable mark in the form o£ a big drum or buoy, or spar, which could bo put In place each race day.

LONG DISTANCE YACHT RACE. The Whangarei Cruising Club held its first ocean race last Saturday, when six yachts started off Onerahi wharf on a sail round Sail Rock, outside the Heads, and back to Home Point, TJrquhart s Bay, a distance of DO miles. The race started at 240 p.m. on Saturday, the starters being Calypso, Bonn, Revel, Rahiri Colonist, and Wakanui. The wind was light on the beat down the harbour, Calypso taking the lead, but the other five were all close to her. Shortly after 4 p.m. the boats passed the Frenchman at the entrance to the harbour, and set a course out to sea for Sail UocK. The wind had freshened from north-east, which gave the boats a lead out to the rock. Rain and foggy conditions made visibility poor. At G p.m. Revel rounded the Kock, one minute ahead of Calypso, Roiia and Colonist rounded at 6.15 p.m., Rnhiri and Wakanui following at 0.20 p.m. The wind again freshened, and it was a beat back to the harbour. Hahiri was last, and lost her bearings, having to anchor outside all night. The finishing times were: Calypso Sh 53m p m Revel Oh 3m, Colonist 9h 24m 30s, Wakanui Oh 30m 30s, Rona Oh 44m.
