MAIL SERVICES.

DISPATCH OF LETTERS. SECOND-CLASS MATTER. SEA CONNECTIONS USED. The mail service for first-class matter is being satisfactorily maintained, and, with improvement in the transhipment arrangements between Taumarunui and Kakahi, delays are being minimised. Suitable sea connections are being made for the carriage of second-class mail matter. The oil tanker New Zealand, which left Auckland this morning for Wellington, took the packages, etc., which had accumulated in Auckland since the dislocation of the ordinary service. The vessel is expected to reach Wellington at 0 p.m. to-morrow, and arrangements have been made to transfer the South Island portion to the Lytteltou ferry, leaving Wellington at 7.45 p.m. There is an accumulation of secondclass mail matter at offices southwards of Hamilton, but postmasters are doing their utmost, as opportunity offers, to arrange suitable means of transport. Second-class matter for Auckland which has piled up in Wellington is to be dispatched by the Waipiata, leaving Wellington at 5 p.m. to-day, and for clearances further north the Department is utilising the Hauturu, leaving Wanganui at 5 p.m. to-day, and the Waimea, which is to clear Napier at 3 p.m. to-day. It is expected that the Wellington consignment will be available for sorting at Auckland on Monday morning. The delayed letter mail from the South which arrived at Auckland at 7.45 p.m. yesterday was sorted in the evening, and delivered this morning at the usual hours.
