SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

On Monday evening a dance was held at Matamata in honour of Miss Blanch Ellery. Dancing was enjoyed. Mr. C. Holloway spoke of the popularity of the guest of honour, who was well known in Matamata. Mr. R. King responded. The evening concluded with the singing of "Auld Lang Svne " ....

A well attended meeting of the Mount Albert branch of the Welfare League was held in the Mount Albert Borough Council on Wednesday. Final arrangements were made to form a Mount Albert Women's Welfare Auxiliary. The following officers' were then elected: Patron, Mrs. Stilwell, Mayoress; president, Mrs. Smythe; vice-presidents, Mre. Mcßride, Mrs. Turner, and Mre. Smithurst; hon. sec, Mrs. Weaver; treasurer, Mrs. Carruthers.

The annual dance, organised in aid of the Catholic Church, was held in the Soldiers' Memorial Hall, Kawakawa, on March 17, and proved a great success. The hall was prettily decorated witn multi-coloured streamers and shamrocks, and a large number of dancers were present from all parts of the district. Sonfs were rendered by Mesdames Poole, Woodcocks, Barke and Whyte. Novelty dances enlivened the evening. The balloon, dance proved particularly popular. ' # .

The members of the Takapuna Methodist Guild gave a social and musical send-off to Mrs. Richards, wife of the Eev. H. L. Richards, of the Takapuna Methodist Church, yesterday afternoon, as Mr. and Mre. Richards are leaving shortly to take up a fresh circuit at Palmerston North. The Social Hall was beautifully decorated by the members of the guild, who, wishing to show their appreciation of Mrs.-Richards' work during the last few years, presented her with a handsome cut glass crystal necklet and armlet. Mrs. George Winstone made the presentation and spoke on behalf of the guild. Musical and vocal items were rendered by Mise Clare Armour, and Mesdames Camell and Beauman and Mrs. Richards herself contributed a couple of charming little A happy afternoon was spent, and° after tea had been served Mrs. Richards* spoke a few words of thanks, and regretted having to part with so many true friends and fellow workers, who had been so great a help to her in church work.

A bright and successful social was o-iven by Mrs. White,, of Wiroa Eoad, Devonport, yesterday afternoon for members of the North. Shore Croquet Club and their guests, many of whom were visiting friends from other clubs. A perfect autumn afternoon, beautiful lawns and the gay flowers and shrubs of the borders made a cheery setting for the bright frocks and shady hats of about 100 ladies who were present. Mrs. White received her guests in a navy blue ensemble with smart hat to tone. Among thoee present were: Mrs. Hamilton, president of the Auckland Croquet Club, who wore a champagne marocain frock with shady hat to match, and Mrs. Ctewold, vice-president of the New Zealand Croquet Council, wearing mauve shadow voile. The clubhouse, where afternoon tea was served, was tastefully decorated by Mrs. Beck, secretary, with dahlias and statice, in pink and mauve, the colours of the club, and asparagus and maidenhair ferns, and looked most effective. A flannel dance, organised by members of the Meadowbank Tennis Club, was held on Wednesday evening at St. Chad's Hall, Eemuera. Among those present were:—Mesdames W. Crawford, R. Robinson, A. The Thames Girle' Club held its fir3t reunion for the year in the social room of the Druids' Hall on Tuesday. The president, Mrs. P. McGregor, presided, and extended a warm welcome to all present. A musical programme was provided, followed by gamee and dancing, and a competition was won by Mrs. Wheeler and Mr. Keary, the consolation prizes going to Mrs. Montgomerie and Mr. T. Nichols. The contributing artists were: Mr. and Miss Godkin, duet, euphonium and piano; Mrs. Trowling, 6ongs; Mrs. Wright, songs; Missee Stevens, duet; Mies Eona Speed, elocution. The following committee members were present: Mesdames Andrews, Stubbing, Wright, Nichols, Davison, McGeehan, Mclntyre, Missee Aitken and Gillespie.

A coming of age party was Eeld in Eickits Hall, Taupo, on Wednesday. About 100 guests were present in honour of the coming of age of Gwen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, of Taupo, formerly of Napier. Songs were given by Mr. Harold White. To receive the guests Mrs. Anderson wore beige and brown, and Miss Anderson was in white angelskin satin. Among those present were:—Mesdames R. B. The dancing season at Northcote, and, incidentally, the football season also, was opened last evening with a function in the King's Theatre under the auspices of the Northcote and Birkenhead Rugby Union Football Club. An At Home, given by the president, Mrs. E. G. Bailey, was held on the Waitemata Croquet Club's lawns at Northote yesterday afternoon. The guests were welcomed by Mrs. Bailey, who wore a frock of blue georgette and a. scarf to tone. Progressive croquet was played, the whole of the adjoining bowling green being also occupied for the occasion. The A section was won by Mrs. C. H. Scott, of Henderson, with Mrs. H. Pegler, of Auckland, second. Two Waitemata players, Mrs. F. Hubble and Mrs. T. H. Hurley, were first and second respectively in the B section. The consolation prize was taken by Mrs. A. H. Keesing, secretary of the Auckland Croquet Association, who conveyed the thanks of the visitors to the club. The lawns were excellent, though she hoped the time would come when they would be extended further into the hill. .At her call, hearty cheers were given for Mrs. Bailey for the hospitality extended, and for the Waitemata Club.
