WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.

WAIMAUKU. The Waimauku Women's Institute celebrated its first birthday on Wednesday, when the meeting took the form of an open afternoon. There was an attendance of 80, including representatives from the Helensville-Wood-hill and Kumeu Institutes and the local branch of the Mothers' League. Mrs. Stanley Phillips, president of the executive committee, gave an interesting address on institute work and a talk about the thrift table for the bi-annual meeting in May. Mesdames Milligati and R. Cates, of Kumeu, gave elocutionary items, which were much enjoyed. _ The winners of the various competitions .were Mesdamee J. Hill, W. R. Collins and Miss Joan Rimmer. During the afternoon the first institute baby,. Allan Morris Chaplin, was presented with an institute spoon. The president, Mrs. L. Kerr-Taylor, and Mrs. R. Matheson cut the birthday cake, and the committee acted as hostesses for the afternoon. KOHEKOHE-TE TORO. A social evening for families and friends of the institute members was held in Harcombe's Hall on March 16. A-recitation by Neville Smith and two by Mre. Hill were much appreciated. Games and competitions, for which suitable prizes were given were enjoyed by ail. Duets were sung by Misses D. Just and A. Smith, also by Misses M. Westhead and L. Hamilton. _ Community singing was enjoyed. A.jumble stall did briek trade. The president, Mrs. C. Smith, invited all women in the district to come, to the April meeting and link up with the, institute movement. After supper the. singing of "Aiild Lang Syne" brought, to a close the first social evening of the KohekoheTe Toro Women's Institute. TE TJKTT. A meeting was held on Thursday, "hen Mre. Silcock presided. Three new members were enrolled. A vote of thanks was accorded Mesdames Marx, Peart and Waters for their help toward the success of the show. Mrs. Cogswell won the gurasing competition. . An amusing competition was won by Mrs. Silcock. A demonstration of smocking was given 3y Miss Cynthia Death; roll of honour .'ora Victorian posy, Mrs. Dent 1, Mrs. Dodd 2; something made from tin, Mrs. Featherstonhaugh 1, Miss Featherstonhrugh 2. The hostesses were Mesdames A. Moon and Sweetmcn, Misses M. and S. Wilson.

KNITTED WEAR.—A three-piece ensemble in firmly knitted wool. The belted cardigan and ribbed skirt are -worn with a lighter weight diagonal striped jumper.
