JOY AND GLOOM.
SCENES IN CHAMBER. I Socialists Mute As Nazis Hail Their Leaders. COMMUNISTS ABSENT. United P. A.—Electric Telegraph— Copyright.) | (Received 1.30 p.m.) BERLIN, March 21. Sitting in silent protest, like ghosts }f the dead Weimar Constitution, amid uproarious enthusiasm with gaily uniformed Nazis cheering Captain Goering's alection as Speaker, the Socialists struck i sombre note on the resumption of the Reichstag .proceedings. Heir Kroll, one of the famous leaders of the Opera House, Herren Breitschied and Loebe, as well as Herr Severing, whose absence from Potsdam had led to the belief that they were in custody, were there, remaining motionless when the Nazis leapt to their feet to assent to the election. They were mute, too, \t.'hen cheers greeted Captain Goering's fervent speech. An atmosphere of apprehensiveness marked the opening. Detectives searched visitors and journalists for arms, and affixed a fireproof curtain behind the Speaker's chair. On the stage were the Nazi Imperial banners. The Government benches were vacant. No seats were provided for the 81 Communist deputies, and the 298 Nazis, including Herr Hitler, who was thrice cheered, occupied over half the stalls. The Centre party and Nationalists sat between the Nazis and Socialists.
