THE MILK FIGHT.

VENDORS DISCUSS POSITION

ELIMINATION OF WASTE.

The retailing of milk in the metropolitan area was discussed by the Auckland Milk Vendors' Associaton yesterday, when about 100 members attended a meeting held in the Chamber of Commerce, presided over by Mr. J. Haslam. Sir. F. Andrews recounted previous attempts to establish consolidated milk delivery. Mr. W. H. Madill said the reduction of the retail price of milk to 3d a quart meant hardship to the farmers and all concerned in the trade. Everybody recognised that the trade had not been on a sound economic basis, and assistance was needed from the local bodies, and perhaps the Government. He was not advocating Government control or municipalisation of the supply, but the establishment of a' board of control to devise suitable by-lawu, and Government regulations for town zoning and the elimination of waste, which was tremendous in the trade at present. Mr. F. W. Stonex said that the result of the campaign had been that his firm had increased its sales by 500 gallons a day. Other vendors gave individual experiences, all saying that the reduced price of milk had meant increased sales. Mr. A. C. Trousdale said the producers were in the light to see it through. Mr. H. C. Bull said ho could not see what use the light would be. Mr. C. Wood said legislation was the only remedy to save the position. Ho advocated the formation of a farmers' association, with the object of an agreement being made with the vendors. It was decided to publish a list of all milk vendors "who are out to fight the combine."
