PROBATION GRANTED.
KAITAIA MOARI IN DOCK.
"VERY SPECIAL CONCESSION." A Maori youth, of 18 years, Simeon, of Kaitaia, was placed on probation for two years by Mr. Justice Smith in the Supreme Court this morning. Prisoner had pleaded guilty in the Lower Court to a charge of unlawful carnal" knowledge. Mr. W. Noble, who appeared for Simeon, said prisoner was a wellbehaved and well-educated young Maori. He had gone to St. Stephen's College and so great'were his talents that the Maori bishop was selecting the boy for a candidature in the ministry. Up until the time of this charge, prisoner had an unblemished character.
"My general rule in these cases is to impose a term of imprisonment," said liis Honor, "but after looking into the case and reading the report of the probation officer, I have decided not to adopt that course. Apparently the offence took place at a dance on the night of a wedding. You must understand that you are being given a very special concession. You will be placed on probation for two years and you must' pay the costs, of the prosecution."
