SOUTHERN CROSS.
LEAVES MANGERE TO-MORROW
PRESENTS FOR AVIATOR'S BABY.
Though the tour of New Zealand by Sir Charles Kingsford Smith in the Southern Cross, has been financially successful, what has caused him more pleasure than anything, perhaps, has been the number of presents he has received for his small son. Already lie has 2.30 rattles, besides other articles. He wished, he said, to thank his generous well-wishers.
Sir Charles will probably be flying the monoplane back to Australia some time about March 7, he said, though as yet it had not been definitely arranged that the flight would be made. He said he would rather leave from the Ninety-mile Beach, because it was some 50 miles nearer his destination than Muriwai Beach, and 50 miles over a treacherous sea like the Tasman was a consideration worthy of note. The difference might mean the consumption of another 50 gallons of benzine.
■The machine made 22 flights yesterday at Mangere, taking up about 320 passengers. To-day Sir Charles spent fishing on the Manukau Harbour, as a change from flying the Southern Cross all day. To-morrow at 10 a.m. he will leave Mangere for Whangarei in continuation of his Dominion tour.
