COUNTING VOTES

IRISH ELECTION.

POLLING 80 PER CENT.

Illr. Cosgrave Elected for Cork

Constituency.

INTRICACIES OF THE BALLOT

:[United P.A.—Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received 1 p.m.) DUBLIN, January 25. The counting of votes in the Free i State general election has begun, but i owing to intricacies due to propor- ! tional representation the final figures will not be available until late on : Friday or on Saturday. The poll i averages 80 per cent, compared with 75 last year.

Few first preferences will be decisive, some contests needing a dozen successive counts. Impersonations were widespread. The rowdyism was nothing unusual, the military only occasionally being called to assist the police.

The Army Comrades' Association (the Cosgrave organisation) used tyre levers and spanners against armed opponents at Ballyduff, where a youth was shot in the leg. Soldiers threatened to use •tear gas and quelled a disturbance at Monaglian.

Unopposed candidates include Processors Thrift, Alton and Sir James Craig, Independents for Dublin University, and the Speaker, Mr. Paliy, Pianna Pail. Those elected include Mr. Maguire, Mrs. Concannon, the novelist, and Mr. P. McCilligan, who was Poreign Minister in the Cosgrave Cabinet. A severe blow was the defeat of Mr. Hayes, Speaker during the Cosgrave regime.

The de Valera party is expected to at least retain the Dublin seats.

Mr. Cosgrave has been elected for Cork and Mr. de Valera is leading in Clare.
