PACIFIC ISLE AWARD.

FRENCH OWNERSHIP.

MEXICO AND U.S.A.

MEXICO CITY, December 10.

Fearful that the United States may look with disfavour on the of Clipperton Island, in the Pacific, .800 miles off the Mexican coast, from Mexico to France, the Press here is raising a hue and cry against acceptance of the verdict rendered in February, 1931, by King Victor Emmanuel 111 . of Italy, the arbiter.

The present argument is that the taking over of Clipperton _by France, with the possibility that it might be used by that country as a naval or airplane base which might menace the Panama Canal, would meet with opposition at Washington on the basis of the Monroe Doctrine. This is a reversal of the initial Press reaction, which accepted King Victor Emmanuel's decision as an international contract binding on Mexico. The island, with an area of less_ than nine square miles, has been in dispute since 1909.
