TWO ROADS.

VITAL FINANCE BILL.

French Minister Makes Drastic

Proposals.

MEETING HUGE DEFICIT.

(United r.A.— Electric Telegraph—Copyright) PARIS, January 18. The Minister of Finance, M. Andre Cheron, in introducing the Financial Bill in the Chamber of Deputies, declared that France's choice lay between a bold effort which would save her finances and a feeble policy which would aggravate the situation —a situation which was menacing the national currency. Although the peak of tlie crisis seemed to have passed the fiscal and administrative system needed remodelling. The Budget must be balanced pending reforms, after which a consolidation loan must be. issued to convert the floating debt into a long-term debt. M. Cheron said he accepted the estimate of a deficit of £84,328,000. He proposed cuts of £42,608,000 in expenditure, £43,024,000 additional taxation, also a reduction of £4,500,000 in pensions, though the proposed lottery would compensate ex-servicemen for. cuts. and other reductions.

The Government's chances of winning depend upon * liow much ballast* M. Clieron is prepared to throw out.
