Mr. and Mrs. Herbert H. Broady, who have resided for the greater part of their lifetime at Northcote, leave on Saturday to make their home at Manurewa. Both are held in high regard in the district, in which they have grown up from youth. They have been active workers in the district, particularly in connection with the school committee and the Presbyterian Church. They were given a social in their honour last evening on behalf of the Presbyterian body, when presentations were made. The" Rev. F. A. Thompson, who presided, said that Mr. Broady' had been connected with the work of the Church since boyhood, and had held most of the offices .in the Church, and had been clerk of the session for jthe last 13 years. Mrs. Broady had also taken a leading part in all the women's activities associated with the Church. Mrs. E. Richardson gave a similar testimony on behalf of. the female section of the congregation. A clock, with Westminster chimes, and a suitably inscribed plate was presented to Mr. and Mrs. Broady; a leather bag from the choir to Miss Gwen Broady; a fountain pen from the yoinjg people to Mr. Ray Broady; and a volume of Old Testament stories to little Alwyn Broady. The musical programme comprised pianoforte duets by Misses Pearl and Beryl George, songs l>y Mesdames G. W. Richardson and M. Macdonald, Misses Eva Berry and M. Mitchell, and violin solos by Mr. J. Wright.
* * * The Lady Macbeth of Dame Sybil Thorndike differs in its colour scheme from the Lady Macbeth of Ellen Terry, which Sargeant made famous in his golden harmony hung in the Louvre, in Paris. Dame Sybil uses scarlet in her presentation. From scarlet curtains, which parted to show her shadow, towering and fantastic, in the background, stepped Dame Sybil Thorndike, wljro took the part of Lady Macbeth, says the Christchurch "Times." Her billowing, voluminous scarlet robe, with long pointed sleeves and the scarlet wimple draping her head, lent additional majesty to her commanding figure. White and red, the white of a bed gown and the red of a wimple enfolding her' head.
A charming thought on the part of those who arranged the party given to Dame Sybil Thorndike and her company on Sunday evening in Wellington was to prqsqnt lier.vvith a dainty,, containing some good Maori photdgrap'lis instead of the usual bouquet of flowers, which, though lovely in itself, is evanescent and is just ' a pleasant memory. Dame Sybil, who is vividly interested in the world around her wherever she may be, was much pleased with the gift, and proposed adding to the photographs. I which will make an artistic memento of her travels in this part of the world.
