DROWNED IN CREEK.
AGED MAN IDENTIFIED. RETIRED SEAFARER. The man found drowned in a creek at Mission Bay on Wednesday afternoon has been identified as John McKenzie, single, aged 74. From the description of th e <* cad man ' published in last night's "Star," Mr. Ralph Cleland, a friend, was able to identify him, and he communicated with the police. In a statement which he gave to the police, Mr. Cleland said McKenzie was an old seafaring man, who, for some time past, occupied a room in Hobson Street, living alone. He had known McKenzie for eight years, and last saw him on Tuesday, sitting on a seat in the Civic Square. He was then in his usual health. McKenzie, added Mr. Cleland, was a sober man, and lived on the money he had saved. Bte was in the habit of going to the wharves and sitting on the seats along the waterfront. He often went fishing with Mr. Cleland on the various wharves. Last Monday McKenzie asked him where Mission Bay was, and when asked if he intended going there, McKenzie replied that he" merely wanted to kno>7 about the place. McKenzie had not worked for fourteen months, when he left his employment at Manunui, in the King Country. He often spoke of a brother, who, he said, was in business in Invercargill. This is believed to be the only relative h e had in tha Dominion. The police are now making inquiries in Invercargill in order to trace this relative, to arrange burial and other matters.
